Telling Tales

Telling Tales is a conceptual series that examines fairy tales through a modern female lens.  Acknowledging how the literary genre first originated with oral storytelling traditions directed towards teaching adults social, moral, and sexual codes and practices, the series captures adult women navigating the gendered strictures of these tales.

Drawing on the recurring motifs in classic fairy tales of red and white, symbolising the two types of women, harlot and virgin, that females are

cast as in the stories, the images predominately operate within this binary colour palette.

Each image’s narrative is also primarily told through the woman’s hair: the signifier of a woman’s identity, and, as Rapunzel illustrates, her pathway to potential freedom and liberation from the tower of ideals and expectations placed upon women.
